Highlands Branch
The Highlands and Islands Branch covers the Local Authority Region of Highland and The Island Authorities of Orkney, Shetland and the Western Isles.
Highland is made up of the former Counties of Inverness-shire, Ross & Cromarty, Nairn,
Caithness and Sutherland. Also involved within Highland are parts of:
Argyllshire - Ardnamurchan and Glencoe
Morayshire - Grantown-on-Spey and Cromdale
This area is Policed by the Northern Constabulary and the bulk of the Branch members are from this Force or the separate Forces within the area prior to amalgamations and Regionalisation in 1975. Membership of the Branch is, however, open to any police pensioner from any force in the country who is now resident in the Highlands and Islands.
It is worth noting that the Highlands and Islands covers an area bigger than Belgium and an idea of the sheer size of the area can be judged by the fact that The Northern Constabulary Police HQ in Inverness is nearer to Leeds than its Police Station in Lerwick, Shetland Isles!

Herewith message received from PC Rosanna MacSween at HQ - please contact her or Insp David Ogilvie direct if willing to assist.
As previously circulated, the UK Police Services Athletics championships is coming to Northern for the first time on Wednesday 30th May at Queen's Park stadium, Inverness. Participants will be from forces all over the UK and Channel Islands. We're expecting 250-300 folk incl families and friends. Lots of different events.
We've got another opportunity for retired officers who might be interested in helping out on 30th May. What we're looking for are keen amateur photographers who would be willing to take photos on the day. Davie is looking to get an 'official' photographer, but we'd like to have a few people spread out around the arena so that we can cover all the events and we thought there might be retired officers who would be interested as well.
If they could just get in touch with Davie Ogilvie david.ogilvie@northern.pnn.police.uk or myself, that would be great.
Kind regards
Rosanna

Employee Assistance Programme (EAP)
Members will be aware that the Force no longer has a Welfare Officer and is in the process of providing alternative provision by means of an EAP (Employee Assistance Programme) conducted by a private company on a contract basis.
Intimation has been received from Northern Constabulary Human Resources Department that the Force is now in a position to launch its Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) with effect from 01 March 2011, and that the contract has been awarded to AXA ICAS.(Tel: 0800 072 7 072) www.wellbeingworks.com or www.icasextra.com (Note: both websites give NO information whatsoever to casual visitors)
Retired officers should all receive some documentation from AXA ICAS inviting them to join the programme (for a fee - payable by you). Each retired officer must decide for him/herself whether it has any benefit.
Herewith for your information is item 6(a) of the 2010 AGM Minutes of the RPOAS Highlands & Islands Branch:-
"Welfare Provision in the Northern Constabulary area :
The Secretary reported that he had attended a Meeting at Police HQ on Thursday, 19 August when Representatives of AXA and PPC presented their tenders for the Employee Assistance Programme. The Secretary gained the distinct impression that both Companies classed the Retired staff (both civilian and Police) as a ‘side-issue’. AXA has had a similar contract in Strathclyde for the past 5 years and the Secretary elicited the information from the AXA Rep. that only 250 Retired ‘staff’ (Police and civilian) had joined at an annual cost of £13 each out of a total retired strength numbering thousands.
"The RPOAS have retained a neutral stance re this welfare provision.
"Each member will be contacted individually by the successful Company and it will be up to each individual to decide if it is for him/her."
