GLASGOW POLICE MUSEUM

The Glasgow Branch of the RPOA(S) would like to inform all members of the RPOA(S) of the following statement issued by the Glasgow Police Heritage Society (GPHS) on 16th November2008.

“The GPHS has announced the closure of the Glasgow Police Museum at 68 St Andrews Square Glasgow with effect from 6th December 2008. This situation has arisen due to Glasgow District Council wishing to close the building following the closure of Glasgow District Court Number One. Every effort has been made by the GPHS to find alternative accommodation but there is a likelihood that the museum artefacts and equipment may have to go into storage until a suitable venue is found.”

Further information can be obtained from the GPHS Chairman, Alastair Dinsmor at:curator@policemuseum.org.uk

RPOAS GLASGOW BRANCH

OVERVIEW REPORT OF THE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 2008

The Glasgow Branch Annual General Meeting took place within the Assembly Hall, Force Headquarters, Glasgow, on Sunday 19 October 2008.  There were 82 members and invited guests present with 40 apologies for absence being recorded.  Strathclyde’s Chief Constable, Mr Stephen House QPM, was unable to attend on the day due to pressing operational commitments being represented by Assistant Chief Constable Hamish Cormack.  The other guests in attendance were Raymond Pratt, Secretary of the Strathclyde Police Federation JBB and the Force’s two Fund Liaison Officers, Mrs Anne Robertson and Robert Manuel.

 OBITUARIES:

On being called to order, the meeting commenced with the Secretary reading the Branch Obituary Roll of the retired officers from Strathclyde and its constituent Forces who had died during the past 12 months.  The Roll listed 39 Branch members and 31 non-Branch members.  During the reading of the Roll, the Secretary highlighted the names of three additional Branch members whose deaths had had not been included in the Obituary Roll circulated to members, these being:

Thomas E HAMILTON, Reg No 140018, retired 1962 died 28 August 2008
William LAING, Reg No 160462, retired 1977 died 2 October 2008
Frederick C YOUNG, Reg No 150018, retired 1973 died 4 October 2008

The reading of the Roll was followed by those assembled rising for a minute’s silence.

GUESTS:

Mr Cormack, intimating the Chief Constable’s apologies for being unable to be present, went on to provide a most interesting and informative insight into modern day policing and in particular the Force’s multi-faceted approach in meeting the diverse challenges it faces.  His address was made all the more profound with the inclusion of a hands on demonstration of the new electronic notebook and pocket printer that was now being rolled out to front-line officers.  Mr Cormack’s address was accorded a warm and prolonged ovation.

Two of the other invited guests, Raymond Pratt and Bob Manuel, also addressed the gathering, providing updates, and useful information on operational and welfare matters affecting both serving and retired officers.  Special mention was made about the financial assistance that was available to serving and retired officers and their families in need and suffering hardship through Police Welfare Funds.  Members were reminded that each case was dealt with in the highest confidence.  Both Mr Pratt and Mr Manuel were accorded warm votes of thanks.

NOTE:  An explanatory leaflet on Police Welfare Funds is available and can be obtained through the Branch Secretary or direct from the Fund Liaison Officers at Strathclyde Police, Occupational Health Department, Glasgow Caledonian University, 70 Cowcaddens Road, Glasgow G4 0BA, telephone number 0141 207 5911 or 5923.
