DUMFRIES AND GALLOWAY BRANCH

Dumfries and Galloway Region is a beautiful part of Scotland situated in the south west corner of the country. It has the benefit of a mild climate due to the effects of the extensive coastal area and the Gulf Stream Drift. There is a varying range of landscape including the Galloway and Moffat hills to the north of the region and the many lovely bays and harbour towns and villages along the extensive coastline. Hill-walking, fishing, sailing, golfing and the whole range of countryside sports are enjoyed. There are many caravan sites across the region giving a wide choice of location. The unspoiled landscape makes the area a haven for those seeking a relaxing and quiet break. The quality of food and drink available across the region is excellent.

BRANCH PROFILE

Dumfries and Galloway Branch encompasses the Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary/Dumfries and Galloway Region area. It stretches from Canonbie, Langholm and Moffat in the eastern area to Cairnryan, Stranraer and Port Patrick areas in the west. The huge geographical area presents its own problems in relation to regular face to face contact among the membership but this is addressed through a network of committee members locally available to address any welfare issues which arise. The increasing use of computerisation is helping to improve communication links.
The Branch has 200 members the majority of whom reside in the Region. A number live elsewhere in Scotland and the UK. A good proportion of the members are also associate members of NARPO. The Branch enjoys excellent support and relationship with members and departments of Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary and liaise regularly on matters of mutual interest.
The Branch hold two main meetings in the year, in April and November and the branch committee also meet regularly.

Half-Yearly Meeting

The Half-Yearly Meeting was held on Sunday 27 April at Dumfries. Members at the pre-meeting lunch at the Aberdour Hotel and at the meeting enjoyed the company of Chief Constable Pat Shearer

The agenda of the meeting included discussion about the forthcoming Annual Lunch, the Police Recreation Club and the Message Distribution System. The Secretary/Treasurer provided a report of recent activity and of the current financial situation. He had attended the recent national Annual Council Meeting and provided an update on the main items. The new constitution had been passed.

The meeting was addressed by Mr Shearer who spoke about his recent arrival from Grampian and that he had been made very welcome. He found D & G to be a good force with a fine history, the best detection rates and high public satisfaction levels. He spoke of the good links with the RPOAS and he looked forward to building on the excellent relationship.

The meeting thereafter discussed the new constitution at length and there was concern expressed about the way the constitution had been introduced and about some of its content. The meeting agreed that a branch sub-committee would examine the document and would report their views to the next meeting for further consideration.

The next general meeting would be on Sunday 2 November 2008. A committee meeting would be held in October.
